“Z-Deck”: The Coolest Parking Ramp Ever Is In Detroit, Michigan

SE 7 6 Augustine Kofie“Z-Deck”, “Z-Ramp”, “Z-Lot”, “The Z”. Call it what you will. One thing is certain. The coolest parking ramp ever is in Detroit, Michigan, USA; as futuristic and visionary in conception, as it is skillful in execution. Similar projects may exist, but we here at I Love Detroit Michigan know of no other like it on Earth. From what we hear, the project unfolded thusly: Local gazillionaire and hyperactive re-developer of downtown SE 6 3 Victor ReyesDetroit, Dan Gilbert, owns a real estate development company, Bedrock Real Estate Services, that made a plan to build the Z-Deck parking ramp on the parcel of land bounded by Grand River, Broadway, Gratiot and Library Street. Local arts champion and “Detroit Beautification Project” mastermind, Matthew Eaton, who also happens to direct the Library Street Collective gallery just around the corner, got wind of it, and, along NW 9 8 Interesni Kazkiwith his Library Street Collective associates, presented Gilbert’s people with an irresistible idea that would make “The Z” the most talked about parking ramp in the world. 25 muralists of national and international renown later, the results are art and architecture history. Eaton, Gilbert, Library Street Collective, the artists and the many other talented individuals who assisted in the production of this most progressive open-air NW 7 3 Edgar Saner Floresgallery have lent yet another air of legitimacy to the street and public art renaissance occurring right here, right now in our great city. For that we emphatically salute and thank them.

Don’t forget to peruse our 109-photo album at the very bottom of this page. Learn more about this project and its artists tomorrow night between 6pm and 9pm at Library Street Collective’s “Exhibit Z”, which will take place at 1260 Library Street in downtown Detroit. We’re guessing you might even get a chance to meet some of them. ~I♥DM
