Richie Hawtin and Benny Benassi at Festival Plaza, Windsor, Ontario, 9-6-2011
The University of Windsor Students’ Alliance hosted a fantastic event along the Detroit River in Windsor’s Riverfront Festival Plaza on Tuesday night as part of the school’s welcome week festivities. Internationally acclaimed talent and hometown hero, Richie Hawtin, along with Italian techno superstar, Benny Benassi, put on a seriously excellent show with the ultra-picturesque backdrop of downtown Detroit’s skyline exponentially enhancing the event’s indulgent atmosphere. Opening act and Windsor native, Heidi, also did her city proud with a very respectable warming-up of the mostly college-age crowd. I Love Detroit Michigan commends the event’s organizers for making it so dang affordable: free for U of Windsor students and a mere five bucks for all others!
Fans of mainstream pop and dance music will undoubtedly recognize Benassi’s most commercially successful work to date: an anthemic remix of Flo Rida’s “Right Round” featuring Kesha. Benassi’s DJ set stayed true to the mostly commercial aesthetic exemplified by this track, with additional crowd-pleasing touches of dub-step thrown in, to boot. Hawtin, ever the artist, was quoted in the U of Windsor student newspaper, The Lance, saying, “I want to give people a great time but I also have a certain artistic slant that I want to bring to those people.” Read the article here, and be assured that Hawtin did indeed bring a more challenging and more underground oriented sound than any of the acts that preceded him. Check out the proof in video form here.
Sadly, the post-9/11 world precludes many Detroit scenesters from attending dance music events in Windsor; events that a mere eleven years ago would’ve been considered essential and un-missable to the vast majority of Detroit’s hard-core tech-heads. (Can you say “Jak-O-Lantern”?!?). To this I Love Detroit Michigan says: “Get a freakin’ passport ya lazy bums! You’re only punishing yourself until you do!” ~I♥DM
